So you might as well like it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Helen Zaltzman, host of the linguistics podcast <em>The Allusionist<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\">At Planet Word, we are endlessly fascinated by the ways language evolves and adapts. And while it may sometimes seem that language takes on a life of its own, it is, ultimately, a social invention, and changes in ways that reflect the way humans are thinking, feeling, and acting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It is no coincidence that in the U.S. right now, with a growing examination of racial bias and the legacy of slavery, some English-speakers are reconsidering the word \u201cmaster,\u201d because of its association with slavery. The word comes up in many different contexts and usages, reflecting its versatility as well as its history. According to Merriam-Webster, the word has been in use since before the 12th century and traces its origins to Middle English, and from there back \u201cfrom Old English\u00a0<em>magister<\/em>\u00a0and Anglo-French\u00a0<em>meistre<\/em>, both from Latin\u00a0<em>magister<\/em>; akin to Latin\u00a0<em>magnus<\/em>\u00a0large.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It can be a noun, adjective, or verb, and it has half a dozen distinct definitions. Among these are \u201can artist, performer, or player of consummate skill,\u201d \u201can original from which copies can be made,\u201d and \u201cone having authority over another.\u201d It is this last sense of the word that is drawing most attention now, but not exclusively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Here are just a few of the instances where we\u2019ve noticed the use of the term \u201cmaster\u201d being reconsidered: in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2020\/06\/12\/tech-industry-has-an-ugly-master-slave-problem\/\">the tech world<\/a>, where some computer code is classified as \u201cmaster\u201d and \u201cslave\u201d; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/wine\/article\/Court-of-Master-Sommeliers-facing-racism-15353437.php\">in the world of wine<\/a>, where sommeliers are rejecting the title \u201cmaster\u201d; in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/06\/25\/us\/master-houston-association-of-realtors-trnd\/index.html\">real estate<\/a>, where the classification of bedrooms is changing; and even in regard to the name of the world\u2019s most famous <a href=\"https:\/\/deadspin.com\/we-ve-lived-with-the-masters-name-long-enough-1844121041\">golf tournament<\/a>, the Masters. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/morning-mix\/wp\/2015\/12\/02\/harvard-college-house-masters-to-get-new-titles-because-of-slavery-connotation\/\">Academic institutions<\/a> have been moving away from the title for years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Columbia University linguistics professor (and Planet Word <a href=\"https:\/\/planetwordmuseum.org\/staff-and-leadership\/\">Advisory Board<\/a> member) John McWhorter says not all usages of the word carry the same freight. \u201cWords occupy splotches of meaning with a core and then assorted metaphorical extensions,\u201d he explains. When it comes to actually addressing someone as \u201cmaster,\u201d McWhorter is all for new titles. \u201cWhere\u00a0\u2018master\u2019\u00a0refers to personal relationships, I say, yes, get rid of it. Quakers got rid of calling male teachers\u00a0\u2018master\u2019\u00a0when I was a kid in the 1970s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">But for more general usage of the word, McWhorter is hesitant to eliminate master entirely. \u201cBut the idea that we should never use the word at all, such as to convey expertise or electronic concepts? To me, that&#8217;s 1) neglecting how words really work, 2) going from progressive to hypersensitive, in that I doubt anyone will hear \u2018master\u00a0sommelier\u2019 or \u2018master\u00a0recording\u2019 and think about slavery and 3) a setup for dissension, as people will endlessly mess it up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cMaster\u201d is not the only word being reconsidered for its exclusionary or racist connotations. At least one city is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mprnews.org\/story\/2020\/06\/17\/city-of-duluth-moves-to-remove-the-word-chief-from-key-job-titles\">eliminating the title \u201cchief<\/a>,\u201d citing sensitivity to their Native American citizens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">What do you think?
