Joe Biden\u2019s victory speech was full of these time-honored techniques. In particular, he drew on the power of his presidential predecessors and other prominent figures by using allusion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en\">Allusion is a reference to a significant person, place, or thing. Speakers often use allusion to place themselves in a historical context and idea stream. They use phrases that have become part of our lexicon to embed themselves in \u2014 and associate their agendas with \u2014 political movements and leaders who have preceded them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">Here are a few examples from Biden\u2019s acceptance speech on November 7:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\" type=\"1\">\n<li><span lang=\"en\">I pledge to be a president who seeks not to divide but unify, who doesn\u2019t see<b>\u00a0red states and blue states, only sees the United States<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span lang=\"en\">Barack Obama (2004): \u201cThe pundits like to slice-and-dice our country into Red States and Blue States. But I&#8217;ve got news for them\u2026 \u00a0We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\" type=\"1\">\n<li><span lang=\"en\">Once again, America\u2019s\u00a0<b>bent the arc of the moral universe more toward justice<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span lang=\"en\">Martin Luther King, Jr. (1968): \u201cWe shall overcome because the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\" type=\"1\">\n<li><span lang=\"en\">And make no mistake,\u00a0<b>too many dreams have been deferred for too long<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">Langston Hughes (1994): \u201cWhat happens to a dream deferred? \/ Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\" type=\"1\">\n<li><span lang=\"en\">Our nation is shaped by the constant battle between our\u00a0<b>better angels<\/b>\u00a0and our darkest impulses. And what presidents say in this battle matters. It\u2019s time for our better angels to prevail.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span lang=\"en\">Abraham Lincoln (1861): \u201c<\/span>We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection.
