February 27 is now celebrated worldwide as Pok\u00e9mon Day, a tribute to a series that has captivated generations.<\/p>\n

Pok\u00e9mon is not just a treasure trove of childhood nostalgia \u2014 it\u2019s also a goldmine of linguistic creativity in both English and Japanese. Let\u2019s explore some fascinating wordplay hidden within this beloved franchise!<\/p>\n

1. Pok\u00e9mon means “Pocket Monsters”<\/h2>\n

“Pok\u00e9mon” is a Japanese portmanteau<\/a> of \u30dd\u30b1\u30c3\u30c8 (Poketto) and \u30e2\u30f3\u30b9\u30bf\u30fc (Monsut\u0101), borrowed from English “pocket” and “monster” and transliterated to fit Japanese phonotactics<\/a>, or the rules of how sounds can be combined. But this is no ordinary loanword \u2014 it’s actually wasei-eigo<\/a> (\u548c\u88fd\u82f1\u8a9e, literally, “made-in-Japan English”). In rare cases \u2014 like with “Pok\u00e9mon,” “cosplay,” or even “salaryman” \u2014 these words get borrowed back into English, but many remain uniquely Japanese.\u00a0Fun examples include \u30ed\u30de\u30f3\u30b9\u30b0\u30ec\u30fc (romansu gur\u0113), meaning “a middle-aged lover” (literally \u201cromance + gray\u201d), and \u30ef\u30f3\u30d1\u30bf\u30fc\u30f3 (wan pat\u0101n), meaning something repetitive or overdone (\u201cone + pattern\u201d).<\/p>\n

2. You Can Sing Emily Dickinson Poems to the Pok\u00e9mon Theme Song<\/h2>\n

The iconic “Pok\u00e9mon Theme (Gotta Catch \u2018Em All!)” was only used for the first 82 episodes of the animated TV show in the U.S., but its nostalgic melody and lyrics have cemented its place in pop culture. Part of the song’s staying power lies in its common meter<\/a> \u2014 a poetic meter that alternates between 4-iamb and 3-iamb lines. Common (or ballad) meter appears in hymns like \u201cAmazing Grace,\u201d folk songs like \u201cHouse of the Rising Sun,\u201d and even the poetry of Emily Dickinson, including “Because I could not stop for Death.” This means you can sing Dickinson\u2019s poetry to the tune of the Pok\u00e9mon theme for some unexpected poetic fun!<\/p>\n

3. Pok\u00e9mon Names Are Full of Wordplay<\/h2>\n

With nearly 30 years of history, Pok\u00e9mon has introduced hundreds of cleverly named creatures into the gaming lexicon. But how are these names created?<\/p>\n

Portmanteau<\/h4>\n

The word “Pok\u00e9mon” isn’t the only portmanteau in the franchise! Portmanteau is a common source for many classic Pok\u00e9mon names, like those of the Generation I starter Pok\u00e9mon Charmander (Char + Salamander), Squirtle (Squirt + Turtle), and Bulbasaur (Bulb + Dinosaur).<\/p>\n\"Pikachu\n

Onomatopoeia and Mimetic Words<\/h4>\n

Onomatopoeia<\/a> are words that come from sounds, like “flutter,” “splash,” “buzz,” and “meow.” Japanese, like English, uses onomatopoeia to imitate sounds, but the language also contains a large number of onomatopoeia-like words, called mimetic words<\/a>, that cover a much wider range of concepts. (Even silence has a sound, \u3057\u30fc\u3093 (sh\u012bn)!) You can see examples of both Japanese onomatopoeia and mimetic words in Pikachu (\u30d4\u30ab\u30c1\u30e5\u30a6), which comes from \u30d4\u30ab\u30d4\u30ab (pikapika), the mimetic word for “sparkle,” and \u30c1\u30e5\u30fc\u30c1\u30e5\u30fc (ch\u016bch\u016b), the sound of a mouse squeaking.<\/p>\n

Puns and Double Meanings<\/h4>\n

Many Japanese Pok\u00e9mon names rely on puns based on homophones and ambiguous meanings. Take, for example, the Japanese name of the cute but irritable Jigglypuff, \u30d7\u30ea\u30f3 (Purin). While it is the Japanese word for \u201ccustard pudding,\u201d it could also reference the mimetic word \u3077\u308a\u3077\u308a(puripuri), which means \u201cangrily, in a huff.\u201d Bulbasaur\u2019s Japanese name is also a pun! In Japanese, Bulbasaur is called \u30d5\u30b7\u30ae\u30c0\u30cd (Fushigidane), which is both a combination of \u4e0d\u601d\u8b70 (fushigi), meaning “strange, mysterious,” and \u7a2e (tane), meaning “seed,” and a pun of the phrase \u4e0d\u601d\u8b70\u3060\u306d (Fushigi da ne), which translates to “Isn’t it strange?”<\/p>\n

4. Some Pok\u00e9mon Names Lose Their Meaning in Translation<\/h2>\n\"Farfetch'd\n

Sometimes, a Pok\u00e9mon\u2019s name in Japanese carries cultural or linguistic references that don\u2019t translate well. Take, for example, the Pok\u00e9mon Farfetch\u2019d, or \u30ab\u30e2\u30cd\u30ae (Kamonegi) in Japanese. The name is short for the proverb \u9d28\u304c\u8471\u3092\u3057\u3087\u3063\u3066\u6765\u308b (kamo ga negi o shottekuru), which roughly means \u201csomething surprising but convenient\u201d (literally, \u201ca duck comes bearing green onions\u201d). Since this saying doesn\u2019t exist in English, the localized name “Farfetch\u2019d” attempts to capture the idea of something rare and improbable.<\/p>\n

Two more good examples of this phenomenon are Wobbuffet, \u30bd\u30fc\u30ca\u30f3\u30b9 (Sonans) in Japanese, and its pre-evolution Wynaut, or \u30bd\u30fc\u30ca\u30ce (Sohnano). The English name Wobbuffet (a portmanteau of \u201cwobble\u201d and \u201cbuffet\u201d) maintains a similar structure to the Japanese for voice-dubbing, but it loses a lot of important \u2014 and humorous \u2014 context. \u30bd\u30fc\u30ca\u30f3\u30b9 (Sonans) comes from the Japanese interjection \u305d\u3046\u306a\u3093\u3059 (S\u014dnansu), roughly meaning \u201cThat\u2019s the way it is,\u201d which is an homage to a famous Japanese rakugo comedian, Hayashiya Sanpei I. Much like the Pok\u00e9mon, Hayashiya was famous for putting his hand to his forehead and exclaiming his catchphrase \u305d\u3046\u306a\u3093\u3059 \u3001\u5965\u3055\u3093 \uff01 (S\u014dnansu, okusan!), \u201cThat\u2019s the way it is, madam!\u201d Wynaut’s Japanese name, \u30bd\u30fc\u30ca\u30ce (Sohnano), derives from the phrase \u305d\u3046\u306a\u306e\uff1f (S\u014dnano?), meaning \u201cIs that so?\u201d While in Japanese the pair is an Abbott and Costello-esque duo with their names forming a back-and-forth conversation of \u201cIs that so?\u201d and \u201cThat\u2019s the way it is,\u201d the names only barely allude to this concept in English.<\/p>\n
